In a new interview with Metal Hammer España, IRON MAIDEN guitarist Adrian Smith shared his views on the December 2024 departure of drummer Nicko McBrain.

McBrain announced his retirement on December 7, 2024 in a statement on MAIDEN's web site and social media.

He has since been replaced by Simon Dawson.

Smith stated that McBrain's decision to step away from touring was primarily due to his health issues, including a stroke he suffered in January 2023 and partial paralysis.

McBrain had also opened up about his stage 1 laryngeal cancer diagnosis six years ago, which he kept mostly under wraps until a single interview in 2021.

Smith described McBrain's exit as heartbreaking, praising the drummer for his massive presence and incredible skills behind the kit.

He noted that McBrain was never going to be replaced, but acknowledged the band's need to continue without him.

Smith also mentioned that McBrain gave Dawson his blessing and wished him luck.

McBrain himself spoke about his decision to retire from touring in an interview with "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" in July 2025.

He stated that he wasn't doing the songs justice due to his health issues, and it wasn't fair on everyone else in the band.

He also mentioned being fed up with touring and not having days to recoup his body.

McBrain officially joined IRON MAIDEN in December 1982 for the 1983 "Piece Of Mind" album and tour, replacing Clive Burr.

He brought a degree of finesse and technicality that helped primary songwriter Steve Harris take MAIDEN down more adventurous paths.
