In a new interview with Chile's Futuro radio, DARK TRANQUILLITY vocalist Mikael Stanne recalled the origins of what is now widely known as โ€œthe Gothenburg sound.โ€ The term refers to the melodic and harsh death metal style that emerged in Sweden in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Bands like AT THE GATES, IN FLAMES, and DARK TRANQUILLITY were among those who took part in this movement.

At the time, Swedish bands combined old-school death metal with more melodic elements found in heavy metal music from the same era.

This blend resulted in a new sound that caught on quickly.

After the interviewer noted that โ€œthe Gothenburg soundโ€ was a significant phenomenon in mid-to-late 1990s, Mikael concurred: "We were just tiny bands from our small city. And it was only when we started touring โ€” I think it was โ€™95 or โ€™96 โ€” I started hearing people go, like, 'Yeah, that Gothenburg sound is cool, man.' And I was, like, 'What do you mean? What is that?'" However, Mikael acknowledges that the term has become synonymous with their sound and style.

DARK TRANQUILLITY's latest album "Endtime Signals", released in August 2024 via Century Media Records, showcases their reinvigorated lineup.

The band continues to thrive under new members Joakim Strandberg Nilsson (drums) and Christian Jansson (bass), alongside Mikael Stanne (vocals).

Their sound remains a testament to their unique blend of melodic and harsh elements that characterized the Gothenburg movement.
