Dave Grohl has spoken candidly about Foo Fighters' decision to part ways with drummer Josh Freese last year.

The band had recruited Freese in 2023 following the death of their long-time drummer Taylor Hawkins, but ultimately decided not to continue working with him after a brief stint together.

In a recent interview on Apple Music 1's The Zane Lowe Show, Grohl explained that the decision was made during a break from touring in 2024.

He emphasized that it didn't happen overnight and involved discussions among all members of the band.

Grohl acknowledged Freese's comments about not fully resonating with the band's music, but also spoke about the emotional complexity of carrying on without Hawkins.

"We had Taylor Hawkins as our drummer for 25 years," he said.

"He was this incredible spirit, an amazing drummer and best friend.

Continuing after him was complicated." Grohl stated that they want to maintain the energy and spirit of their music for Hawkins every day.

Grohl emphasized that it wasn't just him who made the decision but rather a collective call made by all members of the band.

He further discussed how Freese joining them came with immense pressure, especially given his comments about not fully resonating with the band's music.

Despite this decision, Grohl acknowledged that Freese's statement showed he was aware of the importance of feeling connected to the band's music.
