David Lee Roth, the iconic frontman of Van Halen, embarked on his highly anticipated solo tour last Thursday (April 16) at Spokane Live! in Airway Heights, Washington.
The first show of the 30-date North American trek featured a setlist heavy with classic Van Halen tracks, including 'Panama,' 'Romeo Delight,' and 'Jump.' In addition to revisiting old favorites like 'Drop Dead Legs' and 'Jamie's Cryin'', Roth also debuted a live rendition of Billy Joel's 'New York State Of Mind.' Fan-filmed footage from the show is available online.
This leg of the tour follows Roth's surprise appearance at Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival in Indio, California on April 10, where he joined singer Teddy Swims for a performance of Van Halen classic song 'Jump.' Roth's solo shows will feature Al Estrada on guitar, Ryan Wheeler on bass, Francisco Valentino on drums, and Danny Wagner on keyboards.
This marks Roth's first full solo concert in over five years since his 2020 show at the M3 Rock Festival.
After originally leaving Van Halen to pursue a solo career following their '1984' album, Roth returned for a stint in 1996 and then took over as the band's frontman again from 2007 until 2020.
However, the band had not toured since 2015.
Roth announced his retirement in early 2021, stating he was "throwing in the shoes" and would be officially retiring after a residency at Las Vegas's House Of Blues at Mandalay Bay in 2022.
The residency was eventually canceled due to circumstances related to COVID.
