In a new interview with Planet Rock radio's Ian Phillips, DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan discussed the band's reputation for incorporating extensive improvisation into its live concerts.

According to Gillan, this improvisational element is an essential part of the band's shows, and he explained that every performance is unique due to subtle changes made by each musician on a nightly basis.

He praised drummer Ian Paice as "the best swing drummer in living history," while also noting that fellow drummer Lars Ulrich did a notable job covering Paice's signature parts during a performance of their iconic song 'Smoke On The Water.' Gillan explained: "When you're doing so many shows, which is our bread and butter, really — that's what we've always been, is a live band —you've gotta keep things energized when you're on a long tour.

And you can't be changing the set every night because you find your best set, and you really wanna give that to every audience." The vocalist recalled an instance where he made use of creative stage props while touring in Texas with the band's 1980s lineup.

Gillan reminisced about how a screen was installed behind the stage during one of their shows, but he opted for more makeshift solutions, such as decorating with potted plants and arranging plastic urinals along the equipment line, to achieve a "more organic" atmosphere.

DEEP PURPLE will release its latest studio album 'Splat!' on July 3 via earMUSIC.

The band worked with renowned producer Bob Ezrin on this recording, which has been described as their heaviest in many years.

In celebration of the album's release, DEEP PURPLE will embark on an extensive touring schedule that includes no fewer than 86 shows across three continents and 28 countries.
