Canadian music legend Devin Townsend has released his ambitious orchestral-metal opus, The Moth, today (May 29) via InsideOutMusic.

This album marks a decade-long creative journey for Townsend, who considers it his "life's work".

Initially conceived as an idea after an acoustic show in Amsterdam in 2018, The Moth evolved into a reality after Townsend was approached by the head of the North Netherlands' Orchestra and Choir with a unique collaboration offer.

Townsend has also unveiled another part of The Moth narrative through two double-singles: "Prepare For War / The Big Snit".

He shares his thoughts behind these tracks in a short clip available on his Patreon page.

In it, he describes "Prepare For War" as a 'soundtrack for an unmade movie', exploring themes of war and internal struggle.

Meanwhile, "The Big Snit" draws inspiration from a Canadian national film board cartoon.

The Moth album constitutes three distinct parts across its release: The Moth – The Afterlife highlights the grandeur of the orchestra & choir; The Moth – The War is a recording of the live musical debut that took place in March 2025 in The Netherlands, showcasing the raw emotion of performing The Moth for the very first time.

The album's various formats include Ltd Deluxe 3CD+Blu-ray Artbook and Limited Gatefold Triple-Gatefold 180g LP.

Townsend comments on the central gravitational theme of The Moth: true self-acceptance.

He emphasizes the importance of facing uncomfortable realities without turning away, echoing his statement that "The most obvious metaphor for change within the concept of this project was a moth: from caterpillar to an entirely different creature—one so drawn to the light that it burns itself away." A vast team of musicians and contributors participated in The Moth process, including long-time band members Darby Todd, Mike Keneally, James Leach, and guests such as Steve Vai, Anneke van Giersbergen, Lynn Wu (Ou), Travis Smith & Eliran Kantor.

Devin Townsend has also announced a return to touring with the 23-date UK & Europe Metamorphosis solo tour.

Tickets are now available for sale.
