FOO FIGHTERS drummer Ilan Rubin has spoken candidly about his transition to the band, replacing Josh Freese who left in May 2025.

In a new interview with Go With Elmo, Rubin discussed how he landed the gig after departing from Nine Inch Nails last summer.

He stated that he was not aware of any issues between Freese and the FOO FIGHTERS at the time.

Rubin explained, "There is no story, honestly.

I think it's just a very logical thing." Rubin went on to clarify his previous tenure with Nine Inch Nails, stating, "I left my tenure with NINE INCH NAILS to join FOO FIGHTERS.

NINE INCH NAILS needed a drummer, and the drummer they got was the guy who was no longer with FOO FIGHTERS." He also touched on the circumstances surrounding his live debut with the band in September 2025 at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California.

Rubin emphasized that it was not a sudden change but rather a natural progression for him after he left Nine Inch Nails to join the FOO FIGHTERS.

The FOO FIGHTERS announced that they had tapped Rubin as their new drummer in July 2025, joining Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett and Rami Jaffree.
