In a recent interview with Thomas Michiels of Studio Brussel, FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl spoke about the band's new drummer Ilan Rubin.
As transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET, Grohl said: 'It's funny, so [Ilan] was with NINE INCH NAILS for 17 years or something [before he joined the FOO FIGHTERS].
And when he started playing with us, he still had this mindset that it has to be sort of patterned and sound like the record.' Grohl recalled how Ilan would do drum solos during shows, which left him laughing in amazement.
The FOO FIGHTERS announced Rubin as their new drummer in July 2025, after replacing Josh Freese who had left the band in May 2025.
Prior to joining the FOO FIGHTERS, Ilan played with NINE INCH NAILS from 2008 to 2009 and again from 2013 until his latest exit.
The interview highlighted Grohl's enthusiasm for Rubin's drumming style, calling it 'unbelievable' and stating that Ilan had a newfound freedom and liberation in the band.
When asked about how he landed the gig as the FOO FIGHTERS' new drummer, Ilan explained: 'At some point in time I got a call from Dave.' He recalled getting back to the band after his touring commitments ended with NINE INCH NAILS, which had been his previous band for nearly 17 years.
Ilan reflected on his early rehearsal sessions with the FOO FIGHTERS, saying: 'I like to be prepared.
So I'm a bit of a perfectionist in that way.' He had done extensive research on the band's songs and was pleased when they played smoothly during their rehearsals.
The interview showcases Grohl's appreciation for Rubin's drumming skills and Ilan's own excitement about joining the FOO FIGHTERS, calling it 'a great place to be and a great group of people.'
