Former GODSMACK drummer Shannon Larkin has defended the band's decision to hire ex-DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Mangini to sit behind the kit for GODSMACK's current tour.

Mangini joined GODSMACK in early June following the abrupt departure of Wade Murff, who had played with the band for less than a month.

Mangini made his live debut with GODSMACK on June 12 in Riverside, Missouri, just days after Murff's departure to join BLACK VEIL BRIDES on tour in Europe.

Larkin addressed criticism from some fans that Mangini is "overqualified" for the GODSMACK gig during a June 19 livestream on his official YouTube channel.

Larkin stated that Mangini's talent level being high in the drumming world does not mean he can't play a simpler style of music, such as GODSMACK's sound.

He also noted that people tend to compare and judge based on their own standards.

Larkin praised Mangini's skills, saying he has the "beast" within him to be a big rock drummer and doesn't have to do a lot of notes.

He added that Mangini is an interesting drummer to watch, quirky and with his own unique style.

Larkin also acknowledged that GODSMACK's sound is not complex or progressive like DREAM THEATER's music.

GODSMACK is currently on tour in North America with support from STONE TEMPLE PILOTS and DOROTHY.

Mangini had spent 13 years in DREAM THEATER, but exited the veteran progressive metal act when original drummer Mike Portnoy returned to the band in 2023.

He has since released a solo album and formed the band MONOLITH.

Larkin retired from GODSMACK a year and a half ago following the tour supporting the band's "Lighting Up The Sky" album.

In April 2025, Erna released a statement in which he said that Larkin and guitarist Tony Rombola had left GODSMACK 'on good terms', but for no other reason than to fulfill their desire to live a more simple and quiet life away from touring.
