Ex-QUEENSRŸCHE singer Geoff Tate played a one-off intimate acoustic concert at Calabouço Rock Bar in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last Saturday (January 24).
The show—Tate’s only appearance in Latin America—featured a six-piece backing band with Dario Parente and James Brown on guitars; Clodagh McCarthy on saxophone and backing vocals; Carlos Ross on percussion; Gus Monsanto on bass and backing vocals; and Lula Washington on third guitar. Tomas McCarthy also appeared on bagpipes. According to Brazilian journalist Igor Miranda, the sold-out performance was limited to 200 fans and guests.
Surprises in the set included QUEENSRŸCHE songs “Sign Of The Times,” “Out Of Mind,” and “Until There Was You.” Fan-filmed video from the show can be seen below.
In a recent interview with Detroit’s WRIF, Tate revealed that the third chapter in the Operation: Mindcrime series is fully recorded and currently being mixed. He described the album as aggressive, complex, and reminiscent of early QUEENSRŸCHE, adding that Operation: Mindcrime III will be told from Dr. X’s perspective rather than Nikki’s.
The original Operation: Mindcrime, released in May 1988, is widely regarded as one of the greatest concept metal albums of all time, tackling themes of religion, drug abuse, and underground politics. Its 2006 sequel was met with mixed reactions and often criticized as unnecessary.
Tate has previously said his new solo material leans heavily into an early QUEENSRŸCHE sound, describing it as technical and intense. While he later reflected positively on Operation: Mindcrime II as a live experience, the original album remains the release that cemented QUEENSRŸCHE’s legacy as one of metal’s most influential bands.
