'Human' by Death: A Tragic Inspiration Revealed by Paul Masvidal

In an exclusive interview on The Garza Podcast, Cynic's Paul Masvidal recalled the horrifying event that inspired Death's landmark album 'Human'.

During a tour of Europe in 1991, Death members Bill Andrews and Terry Butler toured without frontman Chuck Schuldiner, leading to his lawsuit and subsequent collaboration with guest musicians.

While driving through Miami en route to dinner after rehearsals, Masvidal, Schuldiner, Steve Di Giorgio, and Sean Reinert stumbled upon a motorcycle accident, leaving a young girl deceased and the male victim critically injured.

With no cell phones available, Masvidal stayed with Schuldiner at the scene while the others went to find a payphone to call the police.

It was this grim encounter that solidified 'Human' as Death's most human and influential technical death metal album to date.
