In a recent interview with Songwriting For Songwriters, Ian Gillan confirmed that legendary rock band DEEP PURPLE is putting the finishing touches on a new album for a tentative June 2026 release.

The upcoming effort will be the follow-up to "=1", which came out in July 2024 via earMUSIC.

The new album's lyrical themes are optimistic, with Gillan stating, "It's about the metamorphosis of humanity into a metaphysical state, our next incarnation." This conceptual idea is a departure from the band's previous work, particularly the last album "=1", which dealt with Gillan's frustration with life's complexities.

Gillan also discussed his approach to songwriting within DEEP PURPLE.

He explained that while he has complete freedom in writing lyrics, he must adapt to and fit in with the songs created by the band's various guitar players.

In recent years, Gillan has also been drawn to creating concept albums, which provide cohesion for the entire release.

Guitarist Steve Morse officially left DEEP PURPLE in July 2022 to care for his ailing wife, Janine.

He was replaced by Simon McBride.

Despite losing some of his vision over time, Gillan remains grateful for his sense of humor and has continued to perform live with the band.

However, he admits that he is unsure how much longer he can keep performing due to declining health.

The 80-year-old musician has also been contemplating retirement, stating, "I think if I lose my energy I'm going to stop.

I don't want to be an embarrassment to anyone." The possibility of DEEP PURPLE coming to an end is a reality the band members are facing, but Gillan remains optimistic about their future prospects.

The band recently announced a U.K.

tour for November 2026, featuring dates in Newcastle, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, and London.

With a rejuvenated sound following Simon McBride's addition to the lineup, DEEP PURPLE seems poised to continue rocking for years to come.
