Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted has revealed that he was diagnosed with throat cancer in May of last year.

The diagnosis came after Newsted underwent a procedure to remove lymph nodes from his throat.

In an interview on Bill Burr's Monday Morning Podcast, Newsted explained that the doctor told him he needed to come in for further treatment, which he expected to happen years later due to his accelerated lifestyle as a touring musician.

However, Newsted believes that his exposure to metal music and other factors may have contributed to his cancer diagnosis.

He noted that 70% of male cancers over 40 are caused by HPV, the same virus responsible for iron maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson's tonsil-and-throat cancer.

Newsted has since undergone treatment using transoral robotic laser surgery and is now "good" after a year-long process.

He plans to continue touring with his band The Chophouse Band this summer.

This 18-date run will kick off on July 1 at Northampton's Iron Horse Music Hall, visit major markets across the South, Midwest, and East Coast, and conclude with a two-night stand at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee on July 24-25.

The Chophouse Band features Jason Newsted on vocals and bass, Jesse Farnsworth on guitar and vocals, Jimbo Hart on bass and vocals, Humberto Perez on guitar, and Robert John-Tucker on drums and vocals.

Newsted has been open about his experiences as a touring musician, saying that he feels more clear-headed than ever before after being pulled off substances and habits that were affecting his health.

He hopes to use his platform to raise awareness about the importance of regular check-ups and preventative care.
