Legendary punk frontman Jello Biafra is making progress after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke earlier this month, his family confirmed in an update on March 15.
The 67-year-old artist, best known as the incendiary voice of Dead Kennedys, was hospitalized after collapsing on March 7 due to high blood pressure.
In a statement released on March 15, Biafra's Facebook page reported that he is "making progress but he has a long road of recovery ahead of him." However, Biafra remains cognitively sharp and his fighting spirit continues to inspire fans.
His family explained that it has been "devastating week" with many people reaching out for updates and support.
Biafra himself recounted the frightening moment when he fell ill: "I realized I had 'fallen and I can't get up!' It was at this point I thought, 'Oh shit, I'm having a stroke!' I still have a lot of great stuff in me, but right now I gotta lotta rehabbing to do." His label, Alternative Tentacles, released an initial statement on March 9 confirming that Biafra was hospitalized but stable and thanked fans for their concern.
The punk icon's music continues to be celebrated and influential around the world, with his politically charged sound continuing to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
Through Alternative Tentacles, which he founded in 1979, Biafra has also been instrumental in releasing underground punk, industrial, and experimental music.
