JOURNEY drummer Deen Castronovo suffered a medical emergency during the band's concert in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Thursday, October 8. The show was halted after just two songs, with keyboardist Jonathan Cain addressing the crowd and expressing regret over the incident. Castronovo was subsequently taken to a hospital, and the performance resumed with his drum tech, Steve Toomey, temporarily stepping in behind the drums.
Guitarist Neal Schon later told the audience that Castronovo was expected to recover and that the concert was being held in his honor. The event took place at the BOK Center in Tulsa. Castronovo, who was previously dismissed from JOURNEY in 2015 due to substance abuse and personal misconduct, returned to the band in July 2021 and has performed with them since, initially sharing drum duties with Narada Michael Walden.
In March 2021, Castronovo revealed he had been on opiates for over a year during the pandemic while awaiting back surgery. JOURNEY's 'Final Frontier' farewell tour began in Hershey, Pennsylvania on February 28 and continues through November 28, with the current leg starting on September 12 in Los Angeles and concluding in San Francisco. The band currently features Neal Schon (lead guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals), Arnel Pineda (lead vocals), Deen Castronovo (drums, vocals), Jason Derlatka (keyboards, vocals) and Todd Jensen (bass, vocals).
