One of the most notorious moments in Limp Bizkit's history took place on July 26, 2003.

During the Summer Sanitarium tour stop at Hawthorne Racetrack in Chicago, IL, frontman Fred Durst walked off stage amid boos and hostility from Metallica fans.

According to reports, Durst initially met the animosity with bravado, but the situation quickly escalated into a profanity-laden tirade.

He reportedly insulted fans' throwing skills and launched homophobic remarks before leaving the stage after six songs.

The crowd's anger forced a 90-minute delay before Metallica took the stage.

A class breach-of-contract lawsuit was later filed over the performance, with Chicago lawyer Michael Young representing 40,000 attendees who sought a $25 refund for each $75 ticket.

In a 2025 interview, radio personality Matthew Erich "Mancow" Muller elaborated on why he hated Durst so much, citing Limp Bizkit's manufactured image and engineered appeal to angry teenagers.
