In a new interview with Guitar World magazine, MEGADETH guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari discusses joining the band and stepping in for Kiko Loureiro last year, including the challenge of learning the setlist on short notice.

Mäntysaari revealed that talk of MEGADETH embarking on a farewell tour and releasing a final album came late in the recording process of their self-titled release. Most of the album was already completed by then, though some tracks—such as “The Last Note”—were written after the farewell decision was made.

He described joining MEGADETH during a farewell era as both surreal and exciting, expressing deep appreciation for Dave Mustaine while noting that he’s largely focused on living in the moment rather than overthinking the milestone.

Born in Tampere, Finland, Mäntysaari began playing guitar at age 12 and is also known for his work with WINTERSUN (since 2004) and SMACKBOUND (since 2015). His influences range from IRON MAIDEN and DIO to fusion players Greg Howe, Guthrie Govan, and Brett Garsed, as well as blues legends Eric Clapton and B.B. King.

He credited Finland’s strong metal culture for shaping his career, citing STRATOVARIUS as early pioneers and noting how artists from smaller countries can still achieve global success.

In August 2024, Dave Mustaine said Mäntysaari’s addition revitalized MEGADETH, describing the band as feeling like a true unit again. Mustaine praised Teemu’s musicianship, work ethic, and personality, calling him one of the best guitarists ever to join the band and noting how his presence has elevated the music.
