In a new interview with Poland’s Teraz Rock, Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine discussed the possibility of a solo album after the band’s farewell tour. He said the idea has crossed his mind before and that he’s currently enthusiastic about it, though it would depend on whether his ongoing hand issues allow him to play guitar.

Mustaine said Megadeth’s farewell tour could last another three to five years, potentially ending around 2031, when he would be nearing 70. He also reflected on his 2019 cancer battle, noting that after 51 radiation treatments and nine chemotherapy sessions, he returned to the stage in early 2020. He credited fans for helping him through the ordeal and said he approached cancer with the same mindset he brings to everything else.

He also shared updates on his forthcoming autobiography, In My Darkest Hour, tentatively due in September 2027 via Grand Central Publishing’s Da Capo imprint. The book will be co-written by journalist Joe Layden, who previously collaborated with Mustaine on his memoir and on Ace Frehley’s book.

Reflecting on his career, Mustaine said he always promised himself he would step back once he could no longer give 100 percent every night, a realization that helped shape the decision to make the farewell tour a final goodbye. Despite ongoing health issues—including arthritis, a broken lumbar bone, and a fused back—he said he remains committed to making music for as long as he’s able to give everything he has.
