Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy has weighed in on Rush’s surprise return to the stage, offering perspective as both a lifelong fan and a close friend of the late Neil Peart.

Speaking with Chile’s Futuro, Portnoy called the announcement “extremely exciting” and reflected on the honor of forming a friendship with Peart during the final decade of his life.

While he hasn’t yet seen Anika Nilles perform live—who will step into Peart’s formidable role on Rush’s Fifty Something reunion tour—Portnoy praised her credentials, citing her online work and collaborations with Jeff Beck.

He also addressed past speculation about joining Rush, saying the pressure would have been overwhelming. Portnoy added that he’s relieved it never happened and is happy to watch the band’s next chapter unfold from the crowd.

The tour includes dates in Los Angeles, Fort Worth, Chicago, New York City, Toronto, Philadelphia, Detroit, Montreal, Boston, Cleveland, San Antonio, Denver, Seattle, San Jose, Washington D.C., Uncasville, Hollywood, Tampa, Charlotte, Atlanta, Glendale, Vancouver, and more.
