Japanese post-rock trio MONO have long been a force to be reckoned with in the atmospheric rock scene, but their latest album 'Snowdrop' marks a new level of emotional intensity.

Released as a follow-up to last year's 'OATH', 'Snowdrop' shares much of its predecessor's sound and scale, but swiftly identifies itself as an even more ruinous emotional onslaught.

Guitarist Takaakira "Taka" Goto has always had the ability to wring soul-scalding melodies from his instrument, but on 'Snowdrop', they're more upfront and mesmerizing than ever.

The album's opening title track is lush with peripheral keyboard fog, as Taka picks out an exquisite motif from his guitar.

MONO still manage to make songs sound utterly fresh despite their familiarity.

"Winter Daphne" is a dizzying concoction of melodic brilliance and atmospheric depths, while tracks like "Gerbera", "Farewell to Spring", and particularly standout track "Bells of Ireland", showcase the band's mastery of emotional resonance.

A 50-minute album that refuses to repeat itself, 'Snowdrop' is an immersive and devastating experience that will likely tug at heartstrings.

With its blend of piano, cello, hazy strings (or synths?), and haunting soundscapes, it provides succor and solace via the medium of music.

Just gorgeous.
