Belfast's NIHILANTH have unleashed their twisted, riff-driven abomination on the world with 'Detritus Of Ruin,' a five-track EP that showcases their unique blend of modern extreme metal.
The quintet has skillfully coined a new strain of barbarous, groovy extremity, borrowing liberally from GOJIRA and artful deathcore, while still delivering a big hit of heavy fucking metal.
"Detritus Of Ruin" marks NIHILANTH's first major statement, with the band's warped take on modern extreme metal instantly slipping into a perverse but compelling groove on recent single and fearsome opener "Ruin." With churning, angular riffs and caustic vocals, the quintet takes the pit by storm with feral bursts of speed and grotesque breakdowns.
"The Emergent Truth" and "Fangs" crank up the brutality, with dissonance and discord mangled to fit in with a tumultuous rhythm section that is simultaneously sludgy and precise.
"Fractured" emerges as the most atmospheric song here, with metalcore at its most monstrous and uncompromising.
The EP closes with the spiteful and explosive "Don't Pray For Me," like a kamikaze sprint through a minefield, with jaw-shattering riffing and a mid-song descent into eeriness.
With their confidence and intelligence on full display, NIHILANTH's 'Detritus Of Ruin' is beyond promising and sounds like the start of something gloriously destructive and fiercely original.
