Nile guitarist and vocalist Karl Sanders has undergone multilevel spinal fusion surgery in his neck to address severe spinal cord compression and nerve damage. The procedure, performed on October 1, removed damaged discs and bone pressing on his spinal cord, with donor bone and metal fixation used to stabilize the vertebrae. Sanders confirmed the surgery was necessary to prevent permanent neurological damage, including paralysis, and reported that neck and shoulder pain are easing as he progresses in recovery.
Sanders stated he will be back on stage for NILE's Underworld Europe 2026 Tour, which begins November 29 in Athens, Greece. He is currently walking 2–3 miles daily, undergoing occupational therapy for his right hand, and actively playing guitar. The band confirmed that headbanging will not resume, though Sanders emphasized that music remains central to both his identity and livelihood.
The tour follows a broader lineup shift: Dan Vadim Von departed from NILE in August 2025 to focus on other commitments, and Adam Roethlisberger, formerly of VITRIOL, joined as the band's new bassist and vocalist. Roethlisberger made his live debut with NILE on September 12, 2025, during a U.S. tour opening with CRYPTOPSY.
NILE's tenth album, 'The Underworld Awaits Us All,' released in August 2024 via Napalm Records, was recorded at Serpent Headed Studios in Greenville, South Carolina, and mixed by Mark Lewis. The band is currently working on a new album, with songwriting sessions progressing steadily under the new lineup. In March or April 2027, NILE will co-headline a North American tour with CORONER, supported by SYN ABSENCE, beginning in Greenville, South Carolina, and concluding in Leesburg, Virginia.
