In a recent interview with American Musical Supply, OPETH guitarist/vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt discussed the band's ties to the progressive rock genre.
While acknowledging that OPETH may be considered part of this genre, Åkerfeldt expressed his reservations about being pigeonholed into a specific sound.
Åkerfeldt stated: "Well, I like to think that we're a progressive band, maybe even belong to that genre.
But I make a difference between the genre and actual progressive music...
It doesn't have to be widdly guitar solos..." He emphasized that true progressive music is about blending styles and pushing boundaries.
Åkerfeldt also touched on his own musical influences, citing classic death metal bands like CANDLEMASS and MORBID AGONY.
However, he expressed a lack of interest in newer metal bands, finding them too polished and sterile for his taste.
The conversation also delved into Åkerfeldt's personal preferences and listening habits.
He admitted to being stuck on older records and struggling to keep up with the latest developments in the music scene.
OPETH's latest album, "The Last Will And Testament," was released in November 2024 via Reigning Phoenix Music/Moderbolaget.
The LP features a guest appearance by JETHRO TULL frontman Ian Anderson and has been well-received by fans and critics alike.
