In a new interview with Chile's Sonar FM radio station, DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy discussed his thoughts on RUSH's upcoming comeback tour.
Speaking about the possibility of him being asked to play with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson instead of award-winning fusion drummer Anika Nilles, who will be filling in for late Neil Peart this year, Portnoy acknowledged that it would have been a dream come true to take on the role.
However, he expressed relief that he wasn't approached to join the tour, citing the immense pressure and scrutiny he would face as Peart's replacement.
In January 2026, Portnoy told Chile's Futuro that the prospect of Geddy and Alex touring with Anika was "extremely exciting" and a great opportunity for fans.
He went on to say that he has never seen Anika play in person but has pulled up videos on YouTube to see her performing with Jeff Beck.
Portnoy's discussion about RUSH's final tour, which concluded at the Forum in Los Angeles on August 1, 2015, highlighted his respect for the band and their decision to retire while still able to play well.
He also acknowledged Peart's passing in January 2020 after a three-year battle with glioblastoma.
RUSH will perform multiple shows across Canada, the United States, and Mexico starting June 7, 2026 at The Kia Forum in Los Angeles.
These special "evening with" shows feature two sets each night, with each setlist built from a catalogue of 35 songs including their greatest hits and fan favorites.
The North American leg of the tour is scheduled to stretch into the fall and early winter, with sold-out shows in various cities.
The band will then take the tour to South America and Europe in 2027 before returning home.
Keyboard player Loren Gold has also been announced as joining them on their tour.
