Slash has shared details about an early 2000s Gibson Les Paul Standard in Tobacco Burst that he used during the Velvet Revolver years, in a new video from Gibson TV.
The guitar, part of the first full-production run of Slash’s signature Les Paul models between 2000 and 2002, originally featured a piezo pickup in the bridge and a switch enabling an acoustic tone—offering a practical alternative to a double-neck guitar.
Slash removed the piezo system later, after the acoustic function was no longer needed, and the guitar became his primary instrument during the Velvet Revolver era, replacing his iconic 'Jessica' Les Paul.
In the video, Slash and Mark Agnesi, Gibson’s senior manager, examine the guitar’s extensive wear, including deep buckle rash that Mark jokes is the result of the 'Slash Lab' rather than the Murphy Lab.
Slash describes the guitar as light, aggressive-sounding, and particularly 'bitey' without excessive high-end response.
After years of touring with Velvet Revolver, the guitar bears the physical marks of a hard-working instrument, reflecting its place in one of the most storied rock careers.
