Noting that every act of art can be an act of resistance, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE guitarist Tom Morello explained to Katrin Riedl of Metal Hammer magazine that speaking up against oppression is crucial.
He stated, "Every song sung is a beacon of light in the gathering darkness," and emphasized that courageous artists are necessary to challenge authority.
Despite some critics arguing that metal should not be political, Morello firmly believes that musicians have every right to express their opinions and use their platform for social justice.
In the interview, Tom discussed his recent solo work with Serj Tankian of SYSTEM OF A DOWN on a song called "Adjourn It," which channels the defiant legacy of the classic film "Salt Of The Earth." This movie was one of the first truly independent films made by three Hollywood executives blacklisted for their political beliefs.
It stars real zinc miners and tells the story of Mexican-American miners fighting against labor exploitation, racism, and institutional oppression.
Morello also reflected on how music has personally impacted him and changed his perspective on various social issues throughout his life.
He cited influential bands like PUBLIC ENEMY and THE CLASH as examples of artists who used their platform to express their opinions and challenge the status quo.
This summer, Morello kicked off a European tour with festival appearances at Sweden Rock Festival on June 4, Rock Im Park on June 5, and Rock Am Ring on June 6.
The tour continues through July before wrapping up in October with stops at many prominent metal festivals throughout Europe.
