Legendary rock drummer Carmine Appice has addressed rumors surrounding a potential drumming position in LED ZEPPELIN following John Bonham's death in 1980.
In an episode of the Talk Louder podcast, hosted by veteran music journalist Metal Dave Glessner and vocalist Jason McMaster, Appice revealed that he was indeed rumored for the spot alongside Cozy Powell.
When asked if he would have joined the iconic British band had he been offered the position, Appice explained his obligations to Rod Stewart at the time, stating: "Not that I know of." The drummer went on to describe a conversation with Rod Stewart where they decided to perpetuate the rumors for the sake of ticket sales.
This is not the first time Appice has spoken about Bonham's legacy and influence; in a 2006 interview with Classic Rock Revisited, he discussed how Bonham took inspiration from his triplet patterns on the VANILLA FUDGE song "Ticket To Ride" and incorporated them into LED ZEPPELIN's sound.
The drummer also praised Bonham as an idol and friend, citing their shared history among other drummers in the 1970s.
Appice has toured with a variety of legendary rock acts, including Ozzy Osbourne, Rod Stewart, VANILLA FUDGE, and Jeff Beck.
He previously expressed his desire to join a reunited LED ZEPPELIN on an interview with Totally Driven Radio in 2014.
