Former MEGADETH guitarist Chris Poland has spoken candidly about his past relationship with the band's leader, Dave Mustaine.
In a recent interview with the Heavy Metal Mayhem radio show, Poland discussed how he first joined MEGADETH in the early days and performed on several of their classic albums, including "Killing Is My Business...
And Business Is Good!" and "Peace Sells...
But Who's Buying?" Poland reflected on how Mustaine's music was a departure from traditional metal bands, saying it was more akin to LED ZEPPELIN.
He also discussed how he adapted his playing style to fit in with the band's sound.
However, their relationship eventually soured, and Poland left the band.
When discussing the writing process within MEGADETH, Poland noted that Mustaine wrote all of the songs, but he was given creative freedom to contribute harmonies or minor notes to the music.
He also acknowledged that Mustaine had previously called him a liar on stage after his departure from the band.
The two men have a long and complicated history, with Poland recalling how Mustaine included the three "Rust In Peace" demos on the album's reissue without Chris's permission in 2004.
The dispute led to a lawsuit filed by Poland against Mustaine regarding the use of the demos.
In a separate interview with Darren Paltrowitz, Mustaine spoke about his desire to collaborate with Poland again and how he thought it was a "waste" that their friendship ended due to the lawsuit.
However, Mustaine has also acknowledged that Poland was an excellent guitarist who contributed significantly to MEGADETH's sound.
Poland himself has discussed the dispute in interviews, recalling how he tried to call Mustaine multiple times after discovering that he wasn't being paid for his contributions to the "Rust In Peace" demos.
He described the situation as a "nuisance suit" and emphasized his efforts to work out an amicable resolution with Mustaine."
