Kyle Petty, Son Of Richard. First released as a B-side on most versions of the Fell On Black Days single in
1994, it was next featured on a compilation named Home Alive: The Art Of Self Defense in 1996. Soundgarden's
own compilation Echo Of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across The Path also included it in 2014. It was released
another time that year for Superunknown's 20th anniversary edition. Which also featured a track called
Rehearsal Version, which is an instrumental draft.
Despite appearing on it's re-issue, this song was actually recorded after the album in a September 1994
session with Stuart Hallerman (while Superunknown was recorded in 1993). The band performed this in 1995
on Eddie Vedder's Self Pollution Radio. A few 2014-2017 tour dates finally included this humorous take on
a certain family of NASCAR drivers as well.
The tuning is drop D - DADGbe. SG are taking us through many different time signatures. The drum fill opening
this song consists of three bars of 7/8. The guitar and bass then join for a bar of 5/4. The first verse
could either be counted as twentyfour bas of 4/4 or twelve bars of 8/8... Your call! Repeating in the first
chorus, that could either be six bars of 4/4 or three bars of 8/8. The post-chorus takes us back to nine bars
of 7/8.
Isolating the guitar tracks has unearthed more than you would expect. Kim and Chris are playing together for
most of the song. Kim with heavy distortion throughout and either a flanger or phaser before the solo and a
wah pedal during it. Chris uses very light gain for the intro, verse and post-chorus, but uses a clean setting
with lots of reverb in the chorus. For most parts, the two guitar tracks are going to be playing slight
variations of one another, but they diverge quite a lot in the chorus. Then there are lead overlays from two
guitars in the 2nd verse and one guitar in the 3rd verse.
Lastly, I want to let you know that every single time I get somewhat frustrated in the process of transcribing
music, I hear Chris singing this very chorus in my head: "So get it right!" :)
