Swedish death metallers AMON AMARTH have released their new album, "The Allfather Awakens", on October 2 via Metal Blade Records. The album features Norse deity Oden as a central theme, drawing on both mythological and historical aspects of Viking culture. The record was recorded in two sessions at producer Jacob Hansen's studio in Denmark, with the first session completed in spring 2025 and the final recording finished in March 2026. The band adopted a song-by-song recording approach, focusing on one track at a time to ensure high quality and creative depth. This method allowed for greater refinement and flexibility during production.
AMON AMARTH began writing songs during their touring schedule, with guitarists Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg developing riffs on the road. The process included a warm-up room with digital drums and amplifiers, enabling consistent musical development. The final album was shaped by a commitment to treating each song as a standalone piece, resulting in a cohesive and powerful collection. The track "The Allfather Awakens" was the last song written for the album.
The album's cover art, a portrait of Oden by Tom Thiel, is part of a series of seven album covers created by the artist. The band has also unveiled a new live production inspired by Oden's legendary Golden Hall, transforming their concert experience into a living extension of the album. This production will debut in autumn 2026. The release follows a strong global tour history, including headlining performances at Wacken Open Air, Bloodstock Open Air, and Download, as well as iconic venues like Red Rocks and The Forum. The band's cultural influence is evident through the global phenomenon of 'The Row', first introduced at a 2009 Bloodstock show and now seen at events worldwide, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The new album marks a significant evolution in AMON AMARTH's legacy, blending epic lyricism with immersive live experiences.
