The Metal Voice’s Jimmy Kay spoke in length with documentary director Wes Orshoski about the making of the film, including his experiences filming James Hetfield.
When asked about Filming Hetfield, Orshoski responded, “I love Hetfield, I have so much admiration for him.
Metallica means so much to me.
I was lucky enough to interview Hetfield.
He is so impressive, so cool, and he is so good at it.” However, he noted that Hetfield was already aware of Di’Anno’s past with Iron Maiden.
Orshoski explained how Di’Anno's health nosedived during the Covid-19 pandemic, but he eventually made a heroic return to the stage through the help of fans and doctors.
The film captures this incredible journey in Croatia where Orshoski began shooting in 2017.
“For years there wasn’t much to capture,” says Orshoski.
“Paul was waiting for surgeries that doctors in the UK would not green-light.
He was in an incredibly dark place.
But once he got to Croatia, fans and doctors gave him the hope he was desperately searching for.
It was beautiful to witness.” The film is a unique rock doc that stands apart from its predecessors.
Di’Anno: Iron Maiden’s Lost Singer tells the epic saga of one of icons of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
London-born Di’Anno helped launch Iron Maiden around the world, appearing on two foundational metal albums: their debut self-titled album in 1980 and Killers in 1981.
