Founding BLACK SABBATH member Geezer Butler has confirmed the death of original band singer Ozzy Osbourne, who died on July 22, 2025, from a heart attack.
The death certificate also lists coronary artery disease and Parkinson's disease as contributing factors.
Butler revealed the news in a social media tribute posted on the day of Osbourne's passing, stating: "Goodbye dear friend- thanks for all those years- we had some great fun, 4 kids from Aston- who'd have thought, eh? So glad we got to do it one last time, back in Aston.
Love you." Butler, who served as the band's primary lyricist from its inception, reflected on his final rehearsals with Osbourne in a 2024 article for The Sunday Times.
He recalled that Osbourne was in frail health during the session, requiring assistance from two helpers and a nurse, and was using a black cane studded with precious stones.
During the rehearsal, Osbourne sang only briefly and appeared unusually quiet, contrasting with his earlier persona.
The original lineup of BLACK SABBATH — including Osbourne, Butler, Tony Iommi, and Bill Ward — came together in 1969 and recorded and toured through 1978.
The group periodically reformed through the '90s and 2000s for live performances, regrouping in late 2011 for a new album and tour.
However, Ward withdrew after a few months due to financial issues, and SABBATH has since used Tommy Clufetos as its touring drummer.
Brad Wilk of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE laid down drum tracks on the band's 2013 reunion album, '13'.
The band concluded its 49-year career with the 'The End' tour in February 2017, which ended in Birmingham.
The tour's conclusion was made official due to Tony Iommi's diagnosis of cancer in 2012, which has since kept him from traveling for extended periods.
Iommi, who is currently in remission, has been unable to participate in long-term tours since the illness.
The original lineup’s final performance together took place at Villa Park in Birmingham, with a live stream reaching 5.8 million viewers.
Ozzy Osbourne performed a five-song solo set during that event, seated in a bat-adorned throne."
