Judas Priest has announced the retirement of original bassist Ian Hill from the band. Hill cited advanced arthritis in his shoulders and knees, which has significantly impacted his ability to perform. The condition, which has affected both his left shoulder and right hand, has led to physical limitations that make playing the bass during live shows increasingly difficult. Hill confirmed that he was able to complete the composition of the new album but faced uncertainty about completing the recent European tour due to injury.
During the Brussels show two days before the tour’s end, Hill snapped a tendon in his left shoulder, preventing him from reaching the neck of his bass. As a result, the band called upon Davey Rimmer from Uriah Heep to step in and perform at the London show. Rimmer delivered an impressive performance under short notice.
Hill stated that after decades of prioritizing music over family, he has decided to retire to spend more time with loved ones. The band has confirmed that Davey Rimmer will join Judas Priest from the start of their 2027 tour. Rimmer will continue to play with Uriah Heep in 2026 and on select 2027 shows. For any tour dates where he is unable to participate, Judas Priest will announce a replacement in due course.
