Dimebag Darrell Abbott, frontman of Pantera and Damageplan, was fatally shot on stage on December 8, 2004, at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio. The incident occurred during a performance with Damageplan, when 25-year-old Nathan Gale rushed the stage seconds into the first song and fired multiple shots at close range. In total, four people were killed: Dimebag Darrell, fan Nathan Bray, employee/fan Erin Halk, and another venue employee. Others were injured.

Columbus Police Officer James Niggemeyer responded to the active shooter incident shortly after it began. He was the first officer to leave his substation and arrive at the scene, having carried a Remington 870 shotgun—his hunting weapon since age 12—into the event. Niggemeyer reported that he had no prior knowledge of the band or the performance when he arrived. He only learned after the incident that Dimebag Darrell had been performing.

Upon entering the venue, Niggemeyer discovered that Gale was holding a hostage in a headlock. With no backup on the way and under active shooter protocols, he chose to enter the scene and neutralize the threat. He shot and killed Gale while holding a hostage. Niggemeyer described experiencing full tunnel vision, with only the suspect and hostage visible. He stated that the incident was a culmination of his military and police training, and that the emotional aftermath included severe panic attacks and nightmares.

The incident led to Niggemeyer’s medical retirement from law enforcement. He has since spoken publicly about the psychological toll of ending a life, though he expressed no regret for stopping the gunman.
