Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has announced his new solo album, 'From The Dark,' set for release on October 23 via BMG.
The album marks Iommi's third solo project, following 2000's 'Iommi' and 2005's 'Fused.' 'From The Dark' features Norwegian vocalist Jorn Lande, who shares writing credits on all tracks, alongside bassist Becky Baldwin and drummer Karl Brazil.
The record was co-produced by Iommi and longtime collaborator Mike Exeter, who also served as audio engineer.
Iommi revealed in an interview with Loz Guest on Planet Rock that he developed the album over a period of time, recording ideas with Exeter in his home studio every Monday and Tuesday, without pressure or deadlines.
The album title is derived from a lyric by Jorn Lande, who Iommi first encountered during a 2010 Ronnie James Dio tribute at the High Voltage festival in London.
Iommi said he chose Lande for his voice and experience, noting that he had previously worked with him during the tribute.
Lande, who has performed with Masterplan and released solo material, is credited with vocal performances and lyrical input, though Iommi emphasized he provided no lyrical ideas during the process.
Iommi described the songwriting process as a back-and-forth between riff development and vocal ideas, with Lande often singing over initial guitar lines and Iommi later refining the riffs.
He noted that Lande is rarely satisfied, making it crucial to capture the emotional essence of each track rather than pursue perfection.
All riffs on 'From The Dark' are new, with Iommi stating he has not used any riffs from previous recordings.
Bassist Becky Baldwin, a fan of Geezer Butler, was selected for her authentic style and deep connection to Black Sabbath's bass sound.
Drummer Karl Brazil, a drummer known for his work with Robbie Williams, was introduced through a mutual friend and engineer Mike Exeter.
Iommi wanted to keep the project local, and both Baldwin and Brazil are based in Birmingham.
The album also includes guest appearances from Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, Philip Anselmo of Pantera, Henry Rollins, Serj Tankian of System of a Down, Skin of Skunk Anansie, Peter Steele of Type O Negative, and Ian Astbury of The Cult.
Iommi previously released instrumental tracks 'Scent Of Dark' and 'Deified' in 2023 and 2024, respectively, in collaboration with perfumer Sergio Momo, a guitarist whose work is audible on both tracks.
Iommi, widely regarded as one of the most influential guitarists in modern music, has a career spanning over six decades, including pivotal work with Black Sabbath and extensive collaborations with legends such as Ronnie James Dio and Ozzy Osbourne.
He has received multiple Grammy Awards, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and honorary academic distinctions, including a doctorate from Coventry University and an MBE awarded in June 2026.
The new album continues his legacy of innovation and cultural impact."
